About the event
In this online Zoom event, Gordon Miller, call sign N8GMM, presents an Introduction to Amateur Radio Astronomy. The first part of the presentation will cover a brief history of radio astronomy, a look at the radio sky and how radio telescopes operate. The second part will cover amateur radio operators activities involving space related communications with the ISS, Cube Sat repeaters, Moon Bounce, and reflecting RF off meteor trails and the Aurora Borealis. The final segment of the presentation will include examples and demonstrations of projects that non-licensed radio astronomers can try. These include detecting solar flares, Jupiter’s RF, mapping the Milky Way, detecting pulsars, counting meteors and receiving pictures from the ISS and satellites. The goal of this presentation is to provide resources to amateurs astronomers so they can expand their astronomy experience by trying out some RF projects and working alongside amateur radio astronomers.
